Week 2 – Contact Session

During the week 2 contact session we were introduced to a number of examples that incorporated mixed reality (washing machine interface) and augmented reality (Google Glass) prototypes.

The classs also focused on prototypes as artefacts which highlighted core components when initalising design:

  • Representation
  • Precision
  • Interactivity
  • Evolution

Exercise 1: Think of a device at home regularly used?

Think of a device used at home, something that is regularly used: Kettle

Main interactions with the device: Press the button down to boil water. Refill with water once empty. Mainly used in the mornings when making tea as well as evening for meals.

Design variations: Possibly turn the kettle on automatically without physically having to press the button down (through wireless connection?). A kettle that is linked to the plumbing so that it does not need to be refilled continuously.

Exercise 1.1: Design a prototype that uses augmented or mixed reality to test the variations.

Mixed Reality Prototype: The kettle could be designed in a way that it was linked with an application that allows users to automatically turn the kettle on by using their phone. Their phone can detect the switch of where the kettle is connected to which can then alert the appliance to be powered on. The purpose of the device is to reduce water wastage, and having a setting that will automatically determine how much water is required for a large teapot, or a pot to boil pasta in etc. Another setting will be that it will automatically clean the inside of the kettle to make sure there is no bacteria.
